The Best Way to Add a Fi Tracker to Any Collar or Harness
If you already own gear your dog loves — a collar or a harness they've finally stopped fighting — you shouldn't have to replace it just to use a Fi GPS tracker. The good news is you don't have to. A purpose-built Fi adapter lets you mount your tracker to whatever your dog is already wearing, and keep it there.
I'm Christine. I make Fi adapters by hand in Willow, Alaska, and I've been an official Fi Maker partner since 2021. At the moment, I'm the only official Fi partner making Fi-compatible adapters for all Fi modules. Here's what I've learned about what makes one work — and what to look for if you're shopping.
Understanding the Fi Module Lineup
Fi currently makes two modules — the Fi Series 3+ and the Fi Mini. Earlier generations include the Fi Series 1, 2, and 3.
The Fi Series 3+ is Fi's full-size module. It offers GPS, geofence alerts, and behavior tracking, and it's designed to be worn at the base of your dog's neck for the most accurate sensor data.
The Fi Mini is smaller and lighter, focused on GPS and geofence tracking. It doesn't depend on body position for data accuracy.
If you're not sure which module you have or which one is right for you, Fi's site has a comparison chart and a quick quiz that walks you through it.
Which Adapter Do I Need?
I make two adapters for the Fi Series 3+, plus a Compact Adapter sized for the Fi Mini. Choosing the right one comes down to what you're tracking.
The BH (Behavior) Adapter is for the Fi Series 3+ when you want behavior tracking. Fi's behavior data depends on the module having slight freedom of movement to read sensor input accurately, rather than being held completely flush and rigid against the collar. The BH Adapter is built to support exactly that, so the Fi 3+ can track activity, sleep, and behavior the way it's designed to. It also needs to sit on a collar at the base of your dog's neck — that's how Fi gets the most accurate reading.
The Compact Adapter for Fi Series 3+ is for GPS and geofence tracking only. If you're not using behavior features, the Compact is the better choice — it adds a neoprene cradle that hugs the module and adds impact protection. Placement is flexible; it works on a collar or harness, in any position.
The Compact Adapter for Fi Mini is sized specifically for the smaller Fi Mini module. The Mini focuses on GPS and geofence tracking only, so it doesn't need a specific position on your dog. Like the 3+ Compact, it has a neoprene cradle for impact protection and can be worn on a collar or harness.
If you're not sure which you need, reach out before you order. I'd rather make sure you get the right one the first time.
What Makes Elite Dog Gear Different
Not all adapters are built the same, and the difference matters.
There are a few types of adapters on the market. Some are 3D printed rigid housings — they can crack under stress and don't hold up well in cold, wet, or high-impact conditions. Others use silicone straps that have to feed through your collar's loop, which means removing the collar entirely to install or move the adapter, and silicone is prone to tearing at the snap points over time with regular wear. Most of these come from third-party unofficial makers.
Mine are built differently.
The polyester webbing is genuinely marine and mil-spec grade — built to handle whatever your dog gets into, whether that's a swim in the creek or a working shift in the field. It won't rip, tear, stretch, or degrade.
The two-snap closure means double protection on every wear. The adapter doesn't rely on a single point of failure.
And critically — because the adapter wraps around your collar or harness strap rather than feeding through it, you never have to remove your dog's collar to install or move it. It goes on anything, in seconds.
The Compact Adapter adds a neoprene cradle for impact protection. The BH Adapter is built without one because Fi's behavior tracking depends on the module having slight freedom of movement.
What Widths It Fits
The pattern works across collar and harness widths from ¾" up to 2", and it fits both the Compact Adapter and the BH Adapter the same way. Each one is sewn to order, so it's made for your dog when you order it — not pulled from a shelf.
If your dog's collar fits within that range, the adapter will wrap around it cleanly. And if you have something larger or unusual, just reach out before ordering and I'll let you know what's possible.
Snap Options
You have two choices when you order, and both are built for durability.
Classic Snaps are DOT marine-grade fasteners — the same hardware used on marine canvas, boat covers, and military gear. They're built to stay shut, corrosion-resistant, and Berry Amendment compliant. Available in stainless steel or government black brass. Stainless steel offers the highest corrosion resistance — ideal for dogs who swim, work in saltwater environments, or live in wet climates. Government black brass is coated in black oxide for corrosion and humidity resistance, with a matte finish that disappears against darker collars and tactical gear.
The Classic Snap is the right choice for most dogs and most conditions.
Locking Snaps are DOT Lift-the-Dot fasteners — a heavier-duty government black brass snap that locks on three sides and can only be released by lifting one specific corner. That one-direction release makes accidental opening even less likely. The tradeoff is that Locking Snaps sit a little less flush than the Classic Snap, so they're slightly more visible on the adapter. If your dog is active in the field, working in law enforcement, or you just want that extra confidence, the Locking Snap is worth it.
Built to Move With Your Dog
One of the most common reasons people come to me for an adapter is flexibility. Maybe your dog wears a harness on trail and a collar around town. Maybe you have a puppy who's going to outgrow several collars before they reach full size. Maybe you're a K9 handler who needs to move a tracker between working gear and everyday wear.
Unsnap both, reposition, snap back on. The adapter wraps around whatever you put it on — no feeding through loops, no removing the collar, no tools. As long as the strap width fits, it moves freely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will this work with my specific collar?
If your collar or harness strap is between ¾" and 2" wide, yes. That covers the vast majority of collars on the market. If your strap is larger or unusual, reach out before ordering and I'll let you know what's possible.
Do older Fi modules work with my adapter?
The Fi Series 3 is the same physical size as the Fi Series 3+, so the same adapters fit both. The Fi Series 2 is larger and needs its own adapter — that's a separate listing I'm setting up. Have a Fi Series 1? Reach out and I'll let you know what I can do.
What's the difference between the Classic and Locking Snaps?
Classic Snaps are DOT marine-grade fasteners — built to stay shut, corrosion-resistant, and available in stainless steel or government black brass. They're the right choice for most dogs and most conditions. Locking Snaps are DOT Lift-the-Dot fasteners that lock on three sides and can only be released by lifting one specific corner, which makes accidental opening even less likely. They sit slightly less flush than Classic Snaps but offer extra security for active dogs, working dogs, and field use.
Why handmade instead of 3D printed or silicone?
3D printed adapters can crack under stress and don't hold up well in cold, wet, or high-impact conditions. Silicone straps tear at snap points over time and require you to remove your dog's collar every time you install or move them. Mine are sewn from genuine marine and mil-spec polyester webbing with two heavy-duty DOT snaps — flexible, durable, and built to outlast the collar they're on.
